Cruelty to Animals Act 1876 (UK)| 15 August 1876

ON 15 AUGUST 1876, the UK Parliament enacted the Cruelty to Animals Act 1876.

The Act amended the Cruelty to Animals Act 1849, extending it to animal experiments by licensing and regulating scientific animal experiments and prohibiting such experiments that are painful.

Advocate for Children and Young People Act 2014 (NSW)

ON 24 JUNE 2014, the NSW Parliament enacted the Advocate for Children and Young People Act 2014 (NSW).

The Act is described as: “An Act to create the office of Advocate for Children and Young People and to provide for the functions of that office; to repeal the Commission for Children and Young People Act 1998 and the Youth Advisory Council Act 1989; and for other purposes.”

The Act is to commence on a day or days to be proclaimed.

Lawyers rules to change

ON 13 MAY 2014, the NSW Legislative Council passed the Legal Profession Uniform Law Application Bill 2014.

The new Act will repeal the Legal Profession Act and introduce the Legal Profession Uniform Law early next year, enabling a single national framework for the regulation of the profession.

Intellectual Property Laws Amendment (Raising the Bar) Act 2012

ON THIS DAY in 2012, the Commonwealth Parliament passed the Intellectual Property Laws Amendment (Raising the Bar) Act 2012. Most of the Act commenced on 15 April 2013.

The Act reforms Australian intellectual property law. It amends the Patent Act 1990, Copyright Act 1968, Trade Marks Act 1995, Designs Act 2003 and Plant Breeder’s Rights Act 1994.

The bar has indeed been raised for patent entitlement whilst patent protection has been strengthened. The Act also introduces a raft of procedural and jurisdictional reforms.
